'I'm always looking for the Hows and the Whys and the Whats,' said Muskrat, 'That is why I speak as I do. You've heard of Muskrat's Much-in-Little, of course?'
'No,' said the child. 'What is it?'

Fruit

This first fruit is in the garden, the second and third fruits are on the way to the park. Can you guess them?

  2. I recognize the last picture as wine berries (but perhaps you call them something else?). The first two look sort of familiar, but I have no idea what they are. Please enlighten me! :-)

  3. Wild guesses:-
    Lychee
    White Sapote
    Fijoa
You have some bloody weird fruits in NZ and I think I would need a degree in subtropical botany to score top marks!

  4. Tom, Are they not clickable? (I'm using Firefox now, if that makes any difference...) Please would you try and feed me back.

PI - oh is that what they are called? Thanks! We never knew. They are European imports, I'm sure. I thought they were dewberries.

YP, nice guesses. However none are tropical, sub- or otherwise.

  5. The top fruit is from the tree Cornus Capitata, or Himalayan Strawberry. The fruit are flavourless or slightly bitter, but the wax-eyes and Tuis love them, and they will fight over them.
Lychee was a really good guess YP.

Second one is the fruit of the Japonica.

And the third is a bit like a raspberry. But the leaves are soft and the fruit a round rather than oval shape.

  6. Yes, the third one is a picture of wineberries, one of my favorite berries. I absolutely love them - much better than rasberries. A bit difficult to gather, but worth the effort. Full of healthy goodness, too. Enjoy!
