'No,' said the child. 'What is it?'

Beauty in Unexpected Places

Sometimes I spend so long at the beach looking at distant veiws, the breaking waves and clouds, I forget to look down at my feet.  And here I see them; sturdy little plants of soft bleached colours, eking out an existence in a hostile, dry and salty environment.  Clinging on, holding the sand together, and starting the soil-building process, and providing a tiny, more hospitable micro-climate for insects.   Good on them, I say!

  1. Hi Katherine, what a lovely photo and thought about how we just don't look at the ground beneath our feet...and what miracle may reside there. I found your blog by some happy accident.

I hope we can keep in touch. I'm becomming a follower so I can find you again. I hope you would like to do the same with me at Oasis.

I'm an English professor and a bit of a yogi out of Puerto Rico...don't let either influence you about me...I'm a simple accepting person.

I think it would be great to know someone in blogland from your part of the world! I posted my daughter and her hug project this weekend...come check it out. You really have an artist's eye for photos! I love the perspective you shot. <3

  5. Welcome to TLVD, Cynthia! ANd thank you for your comments. I'll come and visit when I have a few minutes of break time...and your daughter's blog too.
And thanks for popping in Lori - don't know when you have time with all the comments you answer over at your place!
Jinksy - if you want a kiwifruit clock just click on it! There are plenty to go around.
And other tempting choices too, equally nutritious.

The colours in that one are just gorgeous!

When I'm on a beach, I'm nearly always looking downwards, for the small things. But tell me, have you ever found a katipo?

  7. Ah, a katipo. Not recently Jay, but I haven't looked either. Someone told me they are becoming increasingly rare. We used to find them easily on Hawkes Bay beaches when I was younger. Their favourite places are under logs and driftwood. They are actually quite shy and people would never believe they were so numerous. Back then, at least.
