'No,' said the child. 'What is it?'

On an old envelope

The other day I opened a book I've had since I was a teenager and out fell three envelopes with drawings on them.  I actually remember doing them and I know I must have been about 14.  They were from life, because I remember looking for another flower to complete the three and all I found was bolted broccoli in the vegetable garden.  They are only about 2 cm (1 inch) high.  I had good eyesight in those days!  Someone gave me an old dip-pen and I turned it over and used the back to get a really fine line.  I remember I had to sharpen my 'Lakeland' coloured pencils to get the tip pointy enough to colour them in.  I loved those pencils, and I still have them.

  1. Very nice drawings! Your talent was evident from quite early on.

  2. They are very good, even at 14 your talent ran deep. What a treasure and it must have 'upped' your day to have come across them.

  3. You still have the drawings ... and the pencils you used to draw them?!

Some things are really worth hoarding. Even then, you had a good hand.

  4. Ha! And I see I spelled Broccoli incorrectly first time around. Squeezed in the extra 'c'. I still have trouble with broccoli.

  5. They're lovely! It intrigues me how much how a child or teenager is, remains true in later life. Sometimes I read things I wrote from the age of about 15 and I'm impressed at how I was then.

  7. Those are really nice drawings!

I remember drawing on old scraps of paper, too! In fact, I remember a time when I had no idea that you could actually go into a shop and buy the stuff. I thought everyone just had to wait for their Dad to bring some home, like we did! LOL!

  8. Emily, Grit and Jay - I agree with each of your comments! What a coincidence. I guess we have a lot in common and that's why we like each other's bloggings. How nice!
