'No,' said the child. 'What is it?'

The Heart

If Damien Hirst's animals are considered art, then is this huge preserved heart of racehorse Phar Lap's also art?

  1. Now that's a damned good question. Having seen some of Damien Hirst's "work", I'd say the horse's heart is more affecting. I love any art that uplifts me or puts a different angle on life or shows great technical ability but I am sorry to say that I find most of Damien Hirst's stuff quite trite and disengaging. The name seems to precede any possible merit.

  2. Gosh YP. I think that you have just written down a good definition of art. Not that you have to have a good name, although you're probably right there too. Hmmm. Should I get a 'nom de brush', do you think?

  3. It is art, someone has spent much time and deliberation displaying it. It would be a specimen if just thrown in a jar. Damien Hirst could have managed the latter.

  4. For my money neither Damien Hirst's work nor Phar Lap's heart is art. Phar Lap's heart at least has considerable interest and meaning for many people. Hirst's work, I would suggest, means little to few (and the rest couldn't give a damn). However by creating controversy Hirst has at least managed to pursue the art of being famous. So is sitting around in a reality show also art? Seen by more people, apparently more entertaining and perhaps even more controversial.

WV = peffy: the art of fooling as many people as possible for as much of the time as possible.
