'I'm always looking for the Hows and the Whys and the Whats,' said Muskrat, 'That is why I speak as I do. You've heard of Muskrat's Much-in-Little, of course?'
'No,' said the child. 'What is it?'

Day 20. A Jolly Good Day.

All has gone remarkably well today!  When I followed the fluttering scraps of colourful cloth back to my rubber tree early this morning, I was delighted to find a brimming nut-full of white latex.  Back at the beach I mixed it with coconut bark fibre and, allowing each layer to almost dry before I used it, I slowly plastered over the gaping hole in the bottom of the dugout.
It took until almost dusk.  I am finally feeling that escape, or at least another adventure, may be soon coming my way.  I'm so excited!   Yet part of me will be sad to leave this island, and especially this beach that I've come to know so well, and upon which I've come to know myself so much better.  I took a photo of my shadow to mark this time here.

  2. Shucks. Yes, John. I fear I am losing it. Hope is all that's keeping me going.

  3. Have you been hacking at your hair with that penknife? You may be very sorry when you finally reach civilization !
Sorry I've been distracted from my Google Earth searching a bit. I veered over Europe and started to look for holiday destinations in France but I'll go back to combing the islands of Malaysia and Indonesia for one the right shape. At least you seem to be coping OK and you are showing great pioneer spirit. Obviously your ancestors were among the first settlers of NZ.
    Cheers

  4. Oh No Helsie, although my hair has become rather dry with the salt and sun. No, that's my palm-leaf HAT my dear! Island Haute Couture donchaknow! Actually, I'm rather proud of it. It does a good job of keeping the sun off my face.

  5. Oh, and thank you for your efforts. I fear this island is very small. Perhaps it doesn't show on the maps... Are you off to France next year too?

  6. Making plans and researching Katherine but not banking on it. There are a few problems here to be dealt with that might get in the way but I'll be prepared when I get the go-ahead !!

  7. That shadow looks remarkably like the shadow of the fake Captain Cook at Gisborne! Take care in your canoe. Make sure you have plenty of fresh water on board and a woven palm hat to fend off the sun's scorching rays.

  8. That's a good way of going about things Helen.

YP. All us adventurous explorers end up looking very similar after a while. Thank you for your kind advice.
