First Frost

Last night it was clear and cold and by my indoor/outdoor thermometer it was 6ºC inside when I came into the kitchen this morning. And brrr, 0ºC on the verandah. Time to get the kitchen fire lit. When I padded out in my slippers and dressing-gown to get a basket of wood the sun had just risen and the roof was sparkly with the frost crystals. The old Magnolia stellata thinks it's spring, however. Hopefully the petals will de-frost without damage.

    I think magnolias are quite tough, so I hope so, too! Love the stellatas. I have a Susan, which is similar, but magenta.

    Beautiful but I've become terribly nesh in my old age and I do love waking up to a warm house (but a cool bedroom). But I always think that the constant warmth that many in the UK seek in their houses (me included) is a wonderful place for germs to feel at home as well. In the 'good old days' when there was ice on the inside of the windows (before double glazing and central heating) I always felt that the germs were being well and truly controlled.

    Hello Jay. The flowers seem untouched and there was another frost this morning. The white camellias are showing brown however. Magenta sounds lovely.

    Geeb. I love waking up in a warm house too. When I finish this student malarky perhaps I'll get a job and be able to afford to! But it doesn't take long to warm it up in the mornings once the fires are lit.
