'No,' said the child. 'What is it?'

Holes.

After twenty years in this lovely home, I am still undoing some of the stupid things the last two owners did to it.
I have finally gotten around to measuring (with handy tapered pens) the size of the holes that were drilled in almost every corner of every room, through carpet, floorboards, etc, to take what I guess were the cables to a series of speakers run to every room. It's all I can think they would be for. The wind blows up them, and there is an annoying ring of dirty carpet around each one.

And then, Dear Reader, unless you can think of a better way, I will get a length of dowel slightly fatter than the holes, and sharpen portions of it (wish I had a really fat pencil sharpener but will probably have to use my Swiss Army knife) and bang 'em in. Later, if I ever find the $$$ to replace the carpets, I can do a better job, get the exact size and glue then plane them flush.

It's a plan, Stan. And will be another step towards making this a warmer, dryer home.
One small step for a woman, one even smaller step for humankind.

    1. Thanks Helsie. Yes, although it probably seemed a great idea at the time. Like the night they all got a bit drunk and stoned and said to one of their friends they could do with more light in the lounge so he went out to his truck and brought his chainsaw in, started it up and cut a big hole in the ceiling. So the story goes...

    1. You have a house-wide stereo speaker system Red? I think the holes would be fine with wires in them, but the wind whistles through when they are open ...

  3. Can't you lift the carpet and glue some thin plastic to the floor? Then you'd just have to find a bit of pencil sized carpet to fill the hole.

    1. I can't really lift the carpet Cro. It's all nailed down.

  4. A quick squirt of silicon sealant would be easy.

    1. Hmmm, it would be quick, but then I would have to remove it later, and it might get on the carpet...

  5. When I visited you in 2012, you never said that your house was holy Kate! I would have taken off my shoes if I had known.

    1. We usually take off our shoes in this hallowed home anyway YP. I must have made a huge concession to you and Shirley if you didn't.

  6. Your plan sounds like it will work. We don't want that wind whistling thru the rooms any more. Twenty years is enough!

    1. Yes Terra, twenty years is! But, to be fair to me, I have done a lot of other repairs and improvements to the house in that time. Having said that, an old wooden house always needs something.
