Burn-Off

Almost from the start, the starlings have been investigating the chimney. Although there was some chicken wire around it, they were able to find a way in, and on the first day I had my first visitor. It was not able to be tempted out, even with all the curtains but one closed and the window open all day. By this morning there were three starlings, and it was amazing that Shane the chimney sweep was able to get the two live ones out without any damage to them other than panic. However I may have no need to light the fire tonight. On the farm next door they have lit the huge piles of trees that had been cut down some time ago, and I can feel the warmth from here in the lounge!

Each of the two piles are about 15 metres across.

  1. Seems a waste but the penultimate picture is grand.

    1. I agree Adrian. A waste to cut them down, and a waste to just burn them instead of using the stored energy to heat homes. The six piles would probably have heated at least two dozen homes all winter.

  2. These fires look a bit ominous - like those signal fires of old that were lit all across England at certain times to signal important news - what's happening here Kate? A Norman, Saxon invasion? Or maybe it's my ancestor Olaf the Black from Scandinavia.

    1. That hadn't occurred to me Alden. I will try and leave a message here if hoards come over the cattlestop.

  3. Don't people have wood fires where you are? What a waste.

    1. Most older houses do have wood fires Cro. Yes, seems a waste to me too.

  4. I've always wondered about those huge piles everywhere but I suppose the problems of cutting the massive tree boles up are just too great and make the use of them for domestic firewood uneconomic,

    1. Yep. That's probably the reason GB. Also why some people leave their farm cottages empty rather than having the hassle of having someone messy, or worse, destructive, renting it. It's about bother.
