'I'm always looking for the Hows and the Whys and the Whats,' said Muskrat, 'That is why I speak as I do. You've heard of Muskrat's Much-in-Little, of course?'
I nearly always like originals - especially when from the 60's which were my single buying years. Even live versions by the original artiest aren't the same !
Classical Gas was written and first released in 1968 by Mason Williams and I've not been able to get a decent version on YouTube for you but cut/paste this address and see what you think.
It was always a big orchestra led song but in this live version the orchestra overwhelms the guitar a bit - still the best I can find.
I have played my guitar with school orchestras, weekly assemblies and with the children in my class for well over 25 years but when I hear him play I realise I should have practised harder! fantastic playing.
I've been watching/ listening to more of Tommy Emmanuel playing and I like him better and better...
To my offspring: I hereby request a CD for Christmas! Especially if it has Angelina, Those Who Wait, Cowboys Dreams, Son of a Gun, Sanitarium Shuffle, Golliwogg's Cakewalk, SInce we Met and Guitar Boogie... and probably many more!
I watched and listened and decided to watch some more of his stuff on YouTube and I decided that good as he is at what he does, it's not for me.
ReplyDeleteI like my guitarists to play the guitar and not use it and other things like the microphone as percussion additions.
And when he did his thing with one of my favourites, Classical Gas, that's when he just HAD to be stopped.
Just my opinion of course.
I only watched that one clip...
ReplyDeleteWho do YOU like playing 'Classical Gas' then Ian? I've not heard it and I value your opinion for my first time :-)

I quite like Vanessa Mae's take on Classical Gas but it's the only version I've heard.
