'I'm always looking for the Hows and the Whys and the Whats,' said Muskrat, 'That is why I speak as I do. You've heard of Muskrat's Much-in-Little, of course?'
'No,' said the child. 'What is it?'

Homage

I have just finished a small painting of William Morris's design 'The Strawberry Thief'. Sometimes I like the rigid unthinkingness of copying a design. I don't know how much artistic advancement it gives me, but it is relaxing and almost like a meditation.  I have intentionally left this unfinished as were William Morris's own watercolour design originals, which I have had the great pleasure of seeing.

Here's a simpler version I did for a friend while I was in Melbourne.
I think the bird looks a little more friendly.
Now I have stayed up late enough to see the start, the middle and the end of the total lunar eclipse.
It's also time to put the clocks back.
And to remember my dear Russian Baboushka who loved Easter so much.

  1. I'm not familiar with William Morris but I like the designs he's painted.

  2. My mother had her bedroom wallpapered with it.... it was quite something!

  3. I'm not basically an envious person but I would like to be able to paint or at least have had the courage to continue trying all those years ago. At school it was pointed out that my artistic skills were, well, 'limited' to say the least. So I have had to enjoy my art (in its many forms) through the talents of others.

  4. Red - he was one of the big names of the Arts and Craft (Nouveau) movement.
Cro - Good Gracious! That must have been remarkable. I wonder if she had the black ground that I chose?
GB - I think you are too humble. But it's always extremely gratifying to have supporters.

  5. I envy your way with a blank canvas and a paintbrush. I make music, but it disappears into thin air unless someone bothers to record it. The art you make is self-recording, as it were.

I'm thinking your Russian Baboushka may have been Orthodox like Mrs. RWP's family.

    1. That's true Robert. Performance art is gone. And has to be reprised all over again, thus requiring you to create again.

    2. Baboushka did indeed attend the Russian Orthodox Church, when she could find one.
