When I was growing up we all used to sing this song to each other on our birthdays:
Happy Birthday to you
Happy Birthday to you
You look like a monkey
And you smell like one too.
We used to laugh and laugh as if it was the funniest thing in the world.
You can cyber-sing it to me today, if you like.
'Cos I still think it's funny.
Here's our variation:-
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday To You
Squashed tomato and stew,
I saw a fat monkey
and I thought it was you!
Many Happy Returns! xxx
Over here in the motherland it is still Sunday 21st so it isn't yet your birthday even though you imagine it is so I will wish you happy birthday for tomorrow which is your today....The motherland version, at least in East Yorkshire, ended with "You smell like a monkey/ Go back to the zoo!"
ReplyDeleteHuge birthday hugs to you!!!! I hope you enjoyed your day!
ReplyDeleteOur version was "You look like a monkey - go back to the zoo!"
ReplyDeleteBut a very Happy Birthday to you anyway!
Thank you for your versions! I've had a lovely day and have come home to the most beautiful bunch of flowers I can ever remember getting among other things!

ReplyDeleteHow very American of you to have the same birthday as George Washington!
ReplyDeleteOur version used "stink" instead of "smell"...
Verification word is "hetripti" which looks not like a monkey but as though it could be a real place somewhere in NZ.
Happy birthday to you...and many more. Just did the plain version here. Where are all the candles?
ReplyDeleteRobert, Hetripti is just the other side of Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu, which is just the other side of Porangahau, in Hawkes Bay.
ReplyDeleteAnd they say Welsh is complicated....
ReplyDeleteFebruary 22nd is also the birthday of Edna St. Vincent Millay and Ted Kennedy. What company you find yourself in!
ReplyDeleteJudy, I accidentally ate all the other candles. I should have stopped at one glass of the Merlot.
ReplyDeleteRobert, you may bask in the shine of my reflected glory.

ReplyDeletenot really smell like a . . .

ReplyDeleteOh Happy Birthday! We used to sing the same words (and I to my son!), what a small world. BTW, I loved seeing your sunset pictures at Pilot Bay from a couple weeks ago... I can only dream :) (Thanks for coming by too!)
