I appeal to Tauranga and Mount locals to volunteer and wait to be called up, rather than attempt to clean up the oil themselves. Some components of fuel oil can be very toxic and you should avoid it contacting the skin. Keep children and pets away from the beaches. As of this midday today (Thursday) the beaches from Mt Maunganui to the Maketu Estuary have been closed.
This is almost certainly going to be a long, ongoing task, and there will be plenty of opportunity to help in future days and weeks.
Anyone wishing to volunteer should call 0800 645 774 or email iccrena@gmail.com with ‘Volunteers – 1 for all’ in the subject line, full name, contact number and relevant experience.
Don't be too disheartened. It is undesirable, awful for birds and sea life but things will soon sort themselves out.....Britain, South Africa and Spain have had several big spills........non as far as I know have had lasting effects.
ReplyDeleteWe used to use dispersants, these are almost as bad as the oil. At least it will be heavy oil and given reasonable weather should be scoop upable.
Good luck and through the book at those responsible.
Thank you for your kind thoughts Adrian.
